DRWF's largest Diabetes Wellness Day yet

DRWF have just held their largest Diabetes Wellness Day to date in collaboration with the Royal South Hants Hospital and the Hampshire Partnership and NHS Southampton City.

The Southampton Wellness Day, which took many months of planning with the specialist diabetes teams from the Hampshire NHS and Southampton Primary Care Trust, took place at the Southampton Novotel on Saturday June 13th.

The DRWF team and the healthcare professionals involved, all of whom worked voluntarily, worked hard to put on fifteen different workshops throughout the day. Workshops focused on many important aspects of diabetes including diet and nutrition, foot health, oral medications, insulin adjustment and delivery and an overview of diabetes supported with a questions and answers session.

Regular contributor to educational events, Tai Chi instructor, Alison Smith, did a presentation on the history of Tai Chi followed by a hugely enjoyable group exercise. It was great to see everyone having a go!

There was also a vibrant and informative exhibitor’s area, which featured over twenty five stands from the Southampton City PCT support teams, diabetes diagnostic companies, charities and companies involved in the care and management of diabetes.

With over ninety attendees from across the region, the atmosphere was busy, energetic and exciting and many positive comments were received during the day.

The DRWF Wellness Days allow people with diabetes access to a wealth of support and information produced by the charity. They also allow the NHS and PCT to take advantage of DRWF provided funding for educational support days that would not normally be available to them.

DRWF would like to thank Lead Diabetes Nurse Jan Mitchell and her team at the Diabetes Resource Centre, Royal South Hants Hospital, speakers and helpers from the NHS and PCT and to all of the organisations that supported the day by attending with their information stands. Thanks also to the many delegates that came along and the team at the Novotel for looking after everyone's needs on the day.
