Founded in 1985 by Professor Rury Holman, the DTU is one of the largest European clinical diabetes research groups. The DTU investigates the pathophysiology of Type 2 diabetes, evaluates potential therapeutic and preventative treatments and runs several multi-centre clinical-outcome studies including the Atorvastatin in Factorial with Omega-3 fatty acids Risk Reduction in Diabetes study (AFORRD), the Treating To Target in Type 2 diabetes study (4-T) and the UK Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS).

- by participating in their information-gathering programme, answering an occasional questionnaire or survey circulated by the Network
- by participating in one of the clinical trials or research studies adopted by the Network
- by becoming a Patient Advocate, putting forward a perspective from the point of view of the patient
