A new study has shown that people who nap are 26 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who do not.
The research was conducted by scientists at the University of Birmingham and Guangzhou Hospital in China.
The study examined the napping habits of 16,480 older people in China. A large proportion of the group (68%) took a nap at least once a week, which was linked with an increased risk of developing diabetes.
According to the experts, waking up from a nap activates hormones and mechanisms in the body that stop insulin from working properly in the body which could help predispose people to the condition.
The experts have said that several factors may be behind the link, including the fact that people who nap are also probably taking less exercise.
Previous research has shown that night time sleep duration is linked with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The findings from this new study were presented at Diabetes UK's annual conference in Glasgow.
