The Great British Duck Race
DRWF go quackers at the Duck Race!
On Sunday 2 September, the day of the Great British Duck Race arrived and around 160,000 rubber ducks were raced up the Thames to raise money for charity!
At 12 noon the Ducks were loaded in to Molesey Lock, near the fabulous Hampton Court. The race started at 1.30pm when the lock gates were opened and the ducks entered a channel of the river. The natural current propelled them down the 1km course to the finish line at Albany Reach.
The banks of the Thames were packed with crowds cheering on their ducks and the river itself was busy with boats ‘egging’ the leaders on!
The race took about two hours with some stragglers managing to break free the course and make their own way down the Thames! The first duck over the line won £10,000 and the next thirty received runners-up prizes.
It cost £2 to adopt a duck (plus £3 recommended donation to the charity of your choice) and it is thought that over £500,000 was raised for UK charities. DRWF supporters adopted over 80 ducks raising over £240 for the charity.
Thank you to all of our duck sponsors!
