Diabetes Wellness Day 2008

The response to last year's Diabetes Wellness Day in Winchester, Hants was so good that DRWF decided to do it again this year.

Instead of holding the day in the city’s hospital this year, DRWF decided to go out into the community and held it at the Badger Farm and Oliver’s Battery Community Centre.

The day started off with a short introduction from Lee Calladine, Events Co-ordinator, before Jo Head, DRWF Editorial Board, delivered a talk about the basics of diabetes and the relationship between diet, exercise and medications. All this on the first day of her official retirement!

Jo only finished her career as the Lead Diabetes Nurse Specialist at The Royal Hampshire County Hospital the day before, so as always we owe her a great debt of gratitude.

All the best to Jo for her well-earned retirement although she will continue to support DRWF through her work on the Editorial Advisory Board.

Senior Dietitian Sally Roberts was next and presented a highly informative two-hour session on carbohydrates, the importance of diet, and food labelling. She also had everyone working hard with her quiz on nutrition and her interactive session on food groups.

Next came a hearty and healthy ploughman’s lunch and refreshments prepared by the DRWF staff and our hardworking volunteers Maddie Bone, Ian Calladine and Abigail Peett.

After lunch Jo Head took the stage again to talk to the group about the importance of activity and diabetes.

The next session was a fun and inspiring Tai Chi class led by instructor and owner of Tai Chi for Everyone, Alison Smith. Alison took delegates through some basic moves and instruction in Tai Chi outside in the courtyard.

Jo Head wrapped up the day for by taking questions from the delegates on all manner of diabetes related topics.

This year DRWF were lucky to be joined by exhibitors, Roche Diagnostics, A Menarini Diagnostics, Arctic Medical, Forever Living Products and Phoenix Trading.

Special thanks go to The Co-Op Store, Hayling Island for their contribution towards the days’ food and refreshments.
