Recipient:

Dr Sergey Nezhentsev

Project:

Mapping novel type 1 diabetes genes in the major histocompatibility complex

Summary:

Type 1 diabetes is a complex immune-mediated disease with strong genetic susceptibility. Genes located in the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) on human chromosome 6 are its major genetic determinants.
Previous research has shown that MHC contains an uncharacterised type 1 diabetes gene.
The present study will localise this gene and analyse a new type 1 diabetes-associated molecule. It will improve our understanding of the disease pathogenesis and open new possibilities for genetic prediction of type 1 diabetes.
