Mayowa Osundiji was the w
inner of the DRWF Studentship in 2005. But where is he now?
The DRWF PhD studentship awarded to Mayowa paved the way for his post doctoral training at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) at Harvard University, USA where he's finishing his studies.
Mayowa says, 'The DRWF PhD studentship has been immensely beneficial for my training and career progression and I am very grateful to the DRWF for offering me a great opportunity.'
The DRWF studentship offered him a unique opportunity to undertake his Doctoral studies at the prestigious Institute of Metabolic Sciences at the University of Cambridge before going to Harvard.
His former supervisor Mark Evans at the University of Cambridge says 'The studentship was a great success from my viewpoint'.
The DRWF studentship gave Mayowa the opportunity to investigate the role of the hypothalamus in the brain in the regulation of blood glucose levels. His work may allow a better understanding of why certain people develop type 2 diabetes and perhaps allow future treatments for type 2 diabetes to be developed.
Mayowa's findings led him to win the Promega UK Young life scientist award in 2007 at the Life Sciences meeting, a joint meeting of the British Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Physiology Societies at SECC, Glasgow, UK. He received a specially commissioned award, a unique trophy, one year subscription to Science magazine and a cheque for £600.
