Latest issue of Type 1 comic series now published.

A comic book series produced in collaboration with leading diabetes healthcare professionals is launching a new five-part publication (3rd October).

Secret Wards, created by Dr Mayank Patel as the lead author alongside producers Revolve Comics, will be released over the coming weeks – starting with Part One: Enter The Vortex.

The comic is the fifth in the Revolve comics series concentrating on different important aspects living with type 1 diabetes.

Co-creators of the Type 1 Origins comics series, Professor Partha Kar National Specialty Advisor, Diabetes with NHS England and co-lead of Diabetes GIRFT with NHS Improvement, and Dr Mayank Patel, Consultant Physician in Diabetes, University Hospital Southampton have worked with Danny McLaughlin at Revolve, artist comic Jim Lavery.

The series has been produced to help young people understand more about living with diabetes and challenges faced following diagnosis.

A statement from Revolve said: “Whilst everyone knows about the impact of diabetes in the wider world, what is not always appreciated is the impact of having diabetes and being in hospital. In this issue, the reader is taken into the world of how everyday healthcare professionals work to support those with diabetes who find themselves in hospital for a variety of reasons… Enjoy the trip!”

Revolve said: “Our group understands the challenge of living with type 1 diabetes.

“Different people respond to being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in different ways – some like to talk it through, with others preferring to read books and leaflets to learn more.

“Inspired by the legend that is Stan Lee and how he engaged so many young people with his creative allegories that would explore many issues in a fun way, this comic book series provides a means of spreading the type 1 diabetes message by using art. It is our hope that these stories will inform and educate anyone who reads them. For those readers who are newly diagnosed, they will hopefully feel more empowered to look after themselves if not already. It is possible to live a long, healthy life with type 1 diabetes.”
