Join DRWF and the specialist diabetes teams from Hampshire and Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, Southampton and Portsmouth University Hospitals and the West Hampshire Community Diabetes Service this summer for the 8th Annual Diabetes Wellness Day South.

The information pack for the day, including registration form, can be viewed here

After our big move to the Grand Harbour Hotel in 2015, we have taken into consideration your feedback and our own observations and made the decision to relocate to a new and exciting venue and home for our 8th Diabetes Wellness Day South. The venue we have chosen is the fantastic 4* Solent Hotel at Whiteley.  The Solent Hotel is the ideal setting for the new look Diabetes Wellness Day South. Its excellent transport links and central location between the cities of Portsmouth and Southampton and other major towns make it easily accessible to people from all parts of our southern region. With over 250 free parking spaces, Whiteley Shopping Village a stones throw away, nearby bus and train stations and no weekend city centre traffic to contend with, we couldn’t be in a better place.

The Diabetes Wellness Day South will bring together a wealth of information under one roof for people living with diabetes. Family members, friends and carers and those with an interest in diabetes are also encouraged to take part. The day will provide you with the tools, knowledge and practical skills needed to improve life with diabetes and the keys to healthier living. The day is designed to ensure all participants have the opportunity to raise their questions, share their experiences and enjoy the support of a friendly, like-minded diabetes community in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Each year we change the programme to focus on the many different topics that affect people living with diabetes. This year the talks we choose will run as satellite sessions and be repeated throughout the day.

The vibrant exhibition room will form the hub of the day, giving you the opportunity and flexibility to spend as much time as you like visiting the stands and chatting with a variety of experts and healthcare professionals who will be on hand to offer advice on diet, health, lifestyle and the latest blood-glucose meters and diabetes related products and services.

Clair Martin from Seekers Create will join us again this year to lead children living with Type 1 Diabetes, their parents and siblings in some fun and creative crafting. Children will get the chance to do seeker house painting, a bling my pancreas T-shirt competition and an educational diabetes themed hunt around the hotel to seek out answers to the secret seeker questions. We’re sure Captain Insulin will make an appearance too.

If all the learning and information is tiring you out and you fancy stretching your legs and getting some fresh air, a walking leader from Portsmouth Healthy Walks will be with us for the duration of the day to lead you in some short walks around the Solent Hotel’s Trim Trail and explain the benefits of this gentle and popular exercise.

Pilot Douglas Cairns of “Flying With Diabetes” will do a special fly past for us in his two-seat Vans RV8 aerobatic display aircraft that has been used for diabetes awareness-raising speed records and diabetes fund-raising events. Douglas undertook the first ever round-the world flight by a licenced pilot with Type 1 Diabetes. In this ground-breaking world first he flew his twin-engine aircraft 26,300 miles through 22 different countries during a five month journey. * Subject to weather.

As always DRWF is able to subsidise the cost of attendance as part of the charity’s annual educational event programme. There is a small registration fee of £5 per person, which includes the full programme of talks and activities, access to the exhibition hall, refreshments, a hot lunch and free parking.

Once you have registered your place, we will send full details of the programme, directions and other important information a few weeks before the Diabetes Wellness Day South.

The information pack for the day, including registration form, can be viewed here

To register your place, please complete and return the form, with a cheque for £5 per person, made payable to DRWF. The postal address is Mr Lee Calladine, DRWF, The Roundhouse, Northney Marina, Hayling Island, Hampshire, PO11 0NH.
