We have a fantastic programme planned for our award-winning educational wellness days and would love you to join us at an event near you this year!

Our Diabetes Wellness Days support people living with all forms of diabetes. We know that managing and living with diabetes can be a challenge, which is why we developed our educational event programme that bring together a wealth of information under one roof for people living with diabetes, their family members, carers, friends and those with an interest in diabetes.

These events have been recognised by Quality in Care Diabetes - an awards programme for the UK and Ireland that recognises good practice in patient care and joint working in diabetes.

The Diabetes Wellness Event programme forms an important part of our outreach activities.

Established in 2001, the programme has gone from strength to strength in the provision of authoritative information, advice and the practical skills needed to support best possible self-management of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

DRWF subsidises the cost of attendance as part of the charity’s annual educational event programme. We ask for a registration fee of £5 per person, to help with the costs of running the event. The registration fee includes the full programme of talks and activities, access to the exhibition hall, all-day refreshments, lunch and free parking.

For more than 10 years the educational event programme has gone from strength to strength in providing information, advice and practical skills needed to manage and improve life for people living with diabetes.

What makes the Diabetes Wellness Days special?

It is the collaboration between DRWF and local healthcare services, complimenting and reinforcing key health messages to support improved blood glucose control and the improved feelings of well-being people experience after attending the events.

“I learned more at your day than I have learned in the last 14 years living with my diabetes. Thank you for such a great day and your time.”
Mr D. Woolston, Bournemouth

Why should you attend a Diabetes Wellness Day?

We know living with a chronic condition like diabetes can be a daily challenge. Learning effective coping strategies is crucial for maintaining optimal health and a good quality of life. People often tell us they feel overwhelmed by the constant vigilance required to manage their diabetes.

The aim of our days is to provide a relaxed and informal environment where families, friends and carers are encouraged to learn alongside their loved ones to take an active role in their diabetes self-management. Self-management is the cornerstone of diabetes care. Is central to good quality of health. Peer and healthcare professional relationships are also important, that’s why our Diabetes Wellness Days create a sense of community and bring together a wealth of information, expertise and knowledge under one roof.

Family routines are often disrupted by diabetes and modified to accommodate self-management tasks. This can result in diabetes-related distress, poor relationships and reduced wellbeing for the whole family. The Diabetes Wellness Days provide a safe environment, away from the daily hassles, where knowledge can be reinforced, learned and people often meet and make friends with others and can share their experiences. We know this emotional support can help to improve overall wellbeing and make living with diabetes feel less of a burden. We also know that these friendships and support networks last long after the event is over.

“I attended the Diabetes Wellness Day with my wife to learn more about living with diabetes, new drugs and treatments, tips and advice. To put it straight to the point, I was amazed at how much I learned. It has helped me see so many new ways of assisting my wife to keep her diabetes under control and in seeking support from our diabetes team. Thank you for all your help and we look forward very much to seeing you all next year.”
Mr G. Luck, Wolverhampton

How we have developed the Diabetes Wellness Days

Each Wellness Day has a central ‘hub’ exhibition area with multiple interactive talks given by diabetes healthcare professionals offered throughout the day.

The talks cover all aspects of diabetes, including facts about diabetes, foot care, eye care, diet, exercise, physical activity, hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia, travelling, driving, medications and gentle exercises, like tai chi.

The exhibition area includes a variety of stands, manned by experts and separated into health zone, technology zone, community zone, social media and networking zone to ensure attendees are provided with an holistic range of support.

“I attended my first Diabetes Wellness Day North East in 2011 and learned so much about diabetes and met lots of new people and healthcare professionals. I enjoy these events as they allow us to share experiences and support each other.”
Hayley Hakansson, Hartlepool

What can I expect at a Diabetes Wellness Day?

You will have the opportunity to spend as much time as you like visiting the stands and chatting with the visiting healthcare professionals, community groups, holistic practitioners and diabetes industry experts who will be on hand to offer advice on diet, health, lifestyle and the latest blood-glucose meters and diabetes-related products and services, within the exhibition area.

Additionally, a programme of interactive talks and workshops will take place throughout the day. Delivered by the regional diabetes specialised teams, the talks will cover the day to day challenges and self-management strategies.

“Many thanks for organising yet another excellent Diabetes Wellness Day full of useful information with great speakers and friendly atmosphere. It is incredibly useful to hear fresh approaches on treatments and reasoning that can help both new and ancient diabetics like me.  Altogether a great session that must have taken a great deal of organising so my thanks go to all the team. Kindest regards.”
John Munford

Anything else I should know?

We will announce full details of each event programme during the year, but as well as the aforementioned, you can also expect activities such as  trim-trail walks, Tai Chi, Nordic Walking, fun aerobics, armchair exercises, cooking demos and healthy recipe ideas. All day refreshments are provided, as well as a healthy lunch and free parking.

“I felt that the day exceeded my expectations as a volunteer.  It was great to be part of a team of people who were so committed to getting better patient outcomes and Wellness for people with Diabetes.”
Maggie Meer, Founder of Diabetes Professional Care

QIC Diabetes Award

We were delighted to be awarded the Judges' Special Award and Highly Commended in the Empowering People with Diabetes category at the 2017 Quality in Care Diabetes awards.

This award recognises the innovative practice demonstrating quality in diabetes management, education and services for people with diabetes and/or their families, throughout the UK.

Judges said: “The events are clearly user focused, providing an opportunity for peer support and re-engaging those users who have missed out on a structured education.”

“The feedback we receive from across the diabetes community is extremely positive, showing just how important these events are, not only for providing education, but also for community interaction and wellbeing.”
Rachel Knight, Diabetes Care Representative AgaMatrix
