We are indebted to the charitable trusts and foundations who provide ongoing financial support; enabling DRWF to continue to fund valuable, pioneering research into all types of diabetes as well as provide the essential information and educational support programmes to ensure people with diabetes are ‘staying well until a cure is found…’

Each year, we make awards to support 3-year Clinical and Non-Clinical Fellowship posts in diabetes research, alongside 1-year awards that focus on proving new methods and concepts with the aim of securing higher value funding from other institutions. These awards are called ‘Pump Priming’ and enable new and innovative projects to get off the ground. Additionally, we have a long-standing commitment to funding personnel within the DRWF Islet Isolation Facility at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford. These awards make for high value, multi-year financial commitments and Trust and Foundation income ensure that we are able to fulfil these obligations.

In 2012, Dr Shivani Misra, Consultant in Metabolic Medicine and Honorary Research Fellow at Imperial College London, was awarded a Sutherland-Earl Clinical Fellowship to undertake a PhD looking for genetic forms of diabetes (MODY, or maturity onset diabetes of the young) in people from different ethnic groups. She said, “that initial funding was critical. Using it, I was able to take time out from my clinical job and, with support, set up a multi-centre study recruiting all over the country. I am now getting novel and exciting results that are impactful for people with diabetes, so it is pleasing to see those initial ideas coming to fruition.

“The DRWF funding also gave me time to think about research avenues I wish to pursue and allowed my academic career to flourish. I have had so many positive experiences and interactions because of it. Being a clinical academic is challenging at times, but I love what I do. I am so grateful to the DRWF for giving me that initial chance. I now have an exciting area in diabetes research to pursue, none of which would have been possible without their support.”

Dr Misra, went on to be named as one of the Evening Standard’s leading health influencers in London, underpinning our desire to support the very best research, and researchers, in the hope of achieving tangible clinical benefits for people with diabetes in the shortest timeframe.

The continuation of our work is entirely dependent on financial support via trusts, individual gifts, legacies, in memoriam and voluntary donations.  Sustainable support is a crucial when planning future grant projects and the continued development of our outreach programme.

If you are a Trustee with links to a charitable trust, foundation or other voluntary funding body, or perhaps work for a Company that has a charitable arm, please consider DRWF as a worthy recipient of funding.  Every donation we receive will help make a difference to someone affected by diabetes.

Since inception, in 1998, our charity has been transforming lives … committing over £12 million pounds to diabetes research; offering accredited health and social care information to those living with diabetes; and providing Quality in Care Diabetes award winning Diabetes Wellness events, that provide the tools to inspire and empower people to be proactive in their self-care approach.

With over four million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK alone it has never been more urgent to fund research into diabetes treatment, management and we hope, cure. Please consider supporting world class diabetes research and help those who live with it every day by providing financial support to DRWF.

Details of trusts and foundations who have supported us in the provision of our charitable objectives are acknowledged in our annual review which can be found here.
