DRWF Fundraising: Scott training for London Marathon to support son living with type 1 diabetes
Hossack family’s “world changed overnight” at type 1 diabetes diagnosis and now father, Scott, is limbering up to support diabetes research.
The father of a 10-year-old boy living with type 1 diabetes is preparing to be put through his paces for an epic challenge by taking on the TCS London Marathon in support of DRWF.
Scott Hossack of East Kilbride will join around 50,000 runners on Sunday, 26th April for the 26.2-mile endurance test taking in the sights of some of the capital’s world-famous iconic landmarks.
DRWF was delighted to fill our quota of spaces for this year’s event, with Scott securing his place by applying to our fundraising call for runners.
Scott will be cheered on with support from his family on the day, including wife Elizabeth, son Ethan and father Robert.
Scott said: “On 4th November 2024, just one week after his 9th birthday, my son Ethan was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. For any parent, that moment is a profound shock – and for a young child, it means facing a lifetime of daily challenges that no one should have to endure.
“Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, a hormone essential for regulating blood glucose levels.
“Type 1 diabetes is not just about managing blood glucose levels. It means constant monitoring, countless finger pricks, insulin injections, and the constant risk of dangerous highs and lows – all of which can be especially tough for a child.”

Scott said Ethan’s diagnosis was a huge shock for the family: “Ethan’s world changed overnight, and while he remains brave and determined, the reality is that this condition affects every part of his life – from school to sports, from sleep to play.
“Ethan has always been incredibly active and talented. He recently won Most Valuable Player for his football team in the 2024-2025 season. I’m such a proud Dad as I watch him pour his heart into every game. He also loves basketball and embraces life with energy and spirit. But managing type 1 diabetes adds a layer of complexity.”
Scott discussed why he had chosen to support DRWF: “I have spoken with several medical experts, all of whom share a hopeful but honest view: a cure for type 1 diabetes is within reach, and it will come during Ethan’s lifetime. Inspired by that hope – and driven by my desire to protect and support my son – I am committed to doing everything I can to help accelerate this vital research.
“In 2023, I completed my first (and only) marathon – the iconic London Marathon – and in 2026, I have been honoured to be selected by DRWF to run the London Marathon again. This time, I aim to raise as much money as possible to fund the life-changing research that will one day free children like Ethan, and adults, from the burden of this relentless condition.
“Please join me on this journey. Together, we can make a real difference.”
Kerry Chambers, Community Engagement Fundraiser at DRWF, said: “We cannot thank Scott enough for running for DRWF. Every mile he runs brings hope, funds critical research, and helps improve the lives of everyone living with diabetes. His dedication is truly making a difference.”
