Medical research charities spend more than £1.6 billion in UK over last year
New report highlights how donations to medical charities drives invaluable research.
The Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC), of which DRWF is a member, has published it’s annual report on research expenditure.
The report, presented as an infographic, highlights that £1.6 billion was spent in 2024 on research in the UK by AMRC member organisations.
A statement from AMRC said: “Each June, we demonstrate the impact of our sector in an infographic and research expenditure report. These resources are developed using information gathered during our data collection exercise.
“In 2024, our charities spent £1.6 billion on UK research, funded over 25,000 researcher salaries, and invested in more than 1,200 clinical studies or trials.
“Many of our charities exist because of the generosity of the British public. Medical and health charities are the top cause to donate to in the UK.
“Your investment in research is essential to tackle the UK’s health crisis. We’ll continue making the case for strong and sustainable government backing for the life sciences sector to enable you to collaborate and invest with confidence.”
The report showed that more than 80% of charity research grants ere awarded to UK universities in 2024.
In addition, 1,216 research posts were funded by 79 AMRC research charities, including doctors, nurses and midwives.
A statement from DRWF said: “AMRC’s annual infographic showcases the collective impact of its member charities. We’re proud to be part of this. AMRC charities are major contributors to UK medical research, investing in universities and the NHS, as well as supporting the research and development workforce from the earliest stages of their careers.”
DRWF is a member of the AMRC, a membership body representing the leading medical and health research charities who deliver high-quality research that saves and improves lives.
