Free course for people with diabetes and healthcare professionals to increase their knowledge about insulin.

An interactive online diabetes course offered by the University of Southampton in collaboration with the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust adult diabetes team is available to enrol this month.

The Understanding Insulin course begins on Monday, 18th June for 4 weeks, 4 hours per week - and is available for people to sign up here.

The course is run by the University of Southampton in collaboration with the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust adult diabetes team and is available through the Future Learn website.

Dr Mayank Patel, of the University of Southampton and DRWF Editorial Advisory Board member, said: “We have been working since 2015 on this resource for the internationally available Future Learn platform. We have developed a free to access online Insulin based Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), through the University of Southampton. The course covers everything from insulin physiology, biochemistry, through to clinical use and safe application. The target audience is anyone with an interest.”

The current spend on diabetes care by the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK is estimated to be £1.6 million pounds per hour. The cost of managing complications related to type 1 and 2 diabetes makes up 80% of this expenditure, the risk of which could be significantly reduced through effective blood glucose control using insulin.

The four-week course is designed to help participants increase their knowledge about insulin covering safe prescribing, effective clinical use and how different insulins work.

During the course participants can interact with others globally as well as facilitators and mentors and a certificate of completion is available on completion of the course.

Dr Patel added: “We hope to enable healthcare professionals to gain enhanced knowledge in how insulin works and further promote its safe and effective use in the clinical setting. With this MOOC we aim to support NHS England’s plan to improve diabetes care for patients.”

If you are a healthcare professional the course will equip you with the skills to help you reduce insulin-related errors, and if you have diabetes it should show you why insulin is so important for living well.
