Sixth instalment of comic series will be launched to coincide with World Diabetes Day (14th November).

A comic book series produced in collaboration with leading diabetes healthcare professionals is set to return with a sixth edition – set to be launched on World Diabetes Day (14th November).

The Type 1 comic will be the latest in a series of comic books concentrating on different important aspects living with type 1 diabetes created and published by Revolve Comics in collaboration with healthcare professionals.

Co-creators of the Type 1 Origins comics series, Professor Partha Kar National Specialty Advisor, Diabetes with NHS England and co-lead of Diabetes GIRFT with NHS Improvement, and Dr Mayank Patel, Consultant Physician in Diabetes, University Hospital Southampton have worked with Danny McLaughlin at Revolve to produce the series in a now decade-long collaboration since 2015.

For the comics, Dr Patel and Professor Kar have collaborated with individuals living with type 1 diabetes, to share their real world lived experience, through the medium of comic books.

Across the previously published volumes to date, aimed at the wider public, patients and healthcare professionals, they have sought to inform, help and demystify type 1 diabetes.

Dr Patel, who is also on the DRWF Editorial Advisory Board, said: “The comics have always been inspired by popular culture visuals and themes, such as from Marvel, to create stories and use analogies within which key clinical and educational information is also translated.

“A key message is that no one should feel alone with type 1 diabetes, support is always available.”

The comics have been well received and globally downloaded and have also inspired a culturally tailored version created by the Diabesties Foundation in India.

Recent years have seen a rise in the use of wearable diabetes technology and screening for type 1 diabetes. It is these two themes, with a look inspired by the movies Tron, Blade Runner and The Matrix, that have informed the story for Type 1 Volume 6: Awake and Pumped.

Here, the story follows the story of Aiko, a young girl diagnosed with type 1 diabetes after screening, who has her own imaginary perspective on how wearable diabetes technology could help her, as she defends ‘Mega City T-One’ from hostile forces - metaphors for autoimmune induced islet destruction, insulin deficiency and high blood glucose.

Type 1 Volume 6: Awake and Pumped will go live on Friday 14th November, World Diabetes Day and can be downloaded for free globally here
