Trusted health information should be part of patient journey
Greater responsibility called for in call to action by health information groups.
The Patient Information Forum (PIF), the Self-Care Forum and the Personalised Care Institute (PCI) have called for credible, personalised health information and advice to be embedded throughout the healthcare journey, following publication of the NHS 10-year plan.
In a joint statement by the three organisations said a recently published government plan for the NHS “risks failing without access to credible, personalised health information and advice. We found people are keen to take greater responsibility for their health but they consistently struggle to gain appropriate, personalised information and advice.
As we recently reported, the government has published a new 10 Year Health Plan for England that could change how people living with diabetes receive treatment as it promises to “seize the opportunities provided by new technologies, medicines, and innovations to deliver better care for all patients”. The 168-page document outlines three big changes to the operation of the NHS that it says will improve care for all “wherever they live and whatever they earn – and better value for taxpayers”.
The joint statement said: “Personalised, credible health information and advice is fundamental to the success of shifting care out of hospitals, increasing the use of digital tools and moving from sickness to prevention.”
The statement highlighted three themes including that in the UK, people are not being given information and advice which meets their needs and people with long term conditions are disproportionately affected; inappropriate information disempowers people and makes them less able to self-care and self-manage, leaving them at greater risk from misinformation, results in poorer outcomes and increases health inequality; and there is public demand for trusted, accessible and personalised information and advice.
The statement includes three calls to action:
- Credible, personalised information should be embedded throughout the health and care system.
- Ring-fenced funding should be provided within the NHS for training in personalising of information.
- All NHS health and care information should conform to robust, mandatory content standards.
The statement added: “These findings and recommendations support a health and digital literacy friendly NHS. This would empower people to navigate care and self-manage with confidence. Personalised, credible health information and advice is fundamental to the success of the 10-year plan.”
