What we did on our holidays – DRWF summer events reports
DRWF had a busy summer season, with a camp for young people living with diabetes and a busy programme of online webinar events.
It has been an exciting time here at DRWF over the summer season, with multiple events taking place for people of all ages and with all types of diabetes.

Diabetes and Travelling webinar
We kickstarted our educational programme in May, where we were joined by Dr Mayank Patel, Consultant in Diabetes from University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, and an audience eager to learn as many “Top Tips” as possible to plan for their holidays. We literally talked planes, boats, cars and trains and the checklist of the many things that need to be prepared for when travelling with diabetes. This includes everything from insurance and medical supplies, navigating airport security and scanners, to managing extreme temperatures, cabin pressure and pumps, how to keep sensors stuck on when swimming and lots more.

Diabetes Wellness Morning South
Solent Hotel in Whiteley, Hampshire
We returned to in-person events in June with our Diabetes Wellness Morning focused on the important topic of diabetes and looking after your eyes.
We were joined by our colleagues David Matthews, Michaela Wood and Jane Clayson from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Diabetic Eye Screening Programme (Health Intelligence) team, who presented some fascinating talks and a Q&A session that covered everything we needed to know about the retinal screening process, retinopathy, prevention, treatments and doing what we can to keep our eyes healthy.
We were also joined by the teams from Dexcom, OpenSight, The Solent Diabetes Association, Noctura 400, PolyPhotonix and Xyla Health and Wellbeing.

Discover myDesmond webinar
In August we teamed up with the team from the renowned Leicester Diabetes Centre and University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust for a special webinar introducing myDesmond, the award-winning online self-management tool that is designed to empower people on their type 2 diabetes journey.
Guest speakers Bernie Stribling and Julia Burdon talked about the main programme and other associated programmes that support healthy eating, exercise, healthy walking and even how to get involved in diabetes research studies. Bernie will be joining us again in November when we take a deeper dive into that topic in our Why Should You Get Involved in Research? webinar.

Type 1 Diabetes Family Camp
Whitemoor Lakes Activities Centre in Staffordshire
August also saw us co-host our Type 1 Diabetes Family Camp in collaboration with Over The Wall Camp. We welcomed 22 excited families from all over the UK to join us for a whole weekend of “serious fun”. Our families enjoyed canoeing, dancing, arts and crafts, creating diabetes characters, singing, campfires, some surprised screaming after a rogue spider gatecrashed one session and even the chance to meet Dexter the Dog, who made a surprise appearance with the team from Dexcom.
Families also enjoyed diabetes comic books, fluffy Hypo Hippos, science lab dress-up and selfies, diabetes fun facts and a special Q&A and diabetes coffeetime chat for the mums and dads.
It was amazing to see everyone go home so happy, having made new friends and connected with other families in the diabetes community.

Testing Times – From Tech to Tactics: Optimising Your Blood-glucose Management webinar
In September we held our busiest online event yet when we were joined by 117 people and the oracles of all things diabetes technology, Dr Iain Cranston and Professor Partha Kar from Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust, to take part in a discussion and presentations. Dr Cranston and Professor Kar led an informative and interactive webinar where they demystified the latest diabetes technology and provided practical insights to empower people in their diabetes management. Guests had the chance to put their varied and fascinating questions to Dr Cranston and Professor Kar in the concluding Q&A.
