The manufacturers of a continuous glucose monitoring device for people living with type 1 diabetes have advised users to be aware of an update to their systems.
Abbott have advised the FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor will be discontinued in the UK at the end of August 2025.
Those who currently wear a FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor will need to speak to their healthcare professional to get their prescription updated to the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor.
Users are also recommended to make sure that they are running the latest FreeStyle LibreLink app (version 2.12.0.).
The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor is approved to be prescribed via the NHS in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
If you live in England, Wales or Scotland, check the latest guidelines on who should be offered a sensor-based glucose monitor on the NHS.
If you get Freestyle Libre 2 Plus sensors on the NHS, you should also get the other things you need like glucose meters and test strips.
A statement from Abbott said: “We continue to develop our FreeStyle Libre product portfolio as technology evolves to bring the latest innovation to people living with diabetes. Which is why we have taken the decision to discontinue Abbott‘s FreeStyle Libre 2 sensors in UK at the end of August 2025 once people with diabetes have transitioned to FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensors
“The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor sends real-time glucose readings straight to compatible smartphones, additionally it has a 15-day wear time and is suitable for children from the age of two years and above and adults living with diabetes, including pregnant women. And it conveniently works with the current FreeStyle Libre 2 reader and FreeStyle LibreLink app, so it’s a smooth transition.
“The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor is authorised to work with Insulet’s Omnipod 5 AID (Automated Insulin Delivery) system if you live with type 1 diabetes and you are eligible for a hybrid closed loop system.”
