DRWF Research: Use of closed-loop insulin delivery to treat young people with type 2 diabetes.
The three-year Sutherland-Earl Clinical Fellowship is awarded to Dr Rama Gnanakumar of the University of Cambridge.
DRWF is pleased to announce our latest funded-research project has been awarded to explore impact of using closed-loop insulin delivery in young people living with type 2 diabetes.
Dr Rama Gnanakumar, of University of Cambridge, has received the DRWF Sutherland-Earl Clinical Fellowship for her project titled Fully closed-loop insulin delivery in young-onset type 2 diabetes: Assessing impacts on glycaemic outcomes and quality-of-life in a diverse population.
Applications for this fellowship were invited from medically qualified doctors (MBChB or equivalent) working towards a higher degree, for example MD or PhD.
We received a total of five pre-applications, all five were invited to submit a full application and three were invited to interview.

Dr Gnanakumar is the recipient of a £248,410.24 award for her project.
Outlining the study, Dr Gnanakumar said: “Increasing numbers of people under the age of 40 are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, especially those from ethnic minority and/or more disadvantaged backgrounds.
“Keeping blood glucose levels in the target range reduces the risk of serious health problems but can be challenging.
“This research will look at whether an automated insulin delivery system, which includes an insulin pump and a glucose sensor, can help people with type 2 diabetes requiring insulin treatment to better control their glucose levels.
“We will study how this technology affects people aged 18 to 39 with type 2 diabetes, making sure to include people from ethnic minority and more deprived backgrounds.
“Those taking part will spend three months using the automated insulin delivery system and three months using their usual insulin with a glucose sensor, in a random order. In addition to comparing glucose outcomes we will look at whether the technology can improve quality-of-life.”
The Sutherland-Earl Clinical Fellowship is one of three types of research grant currently offered by DRWF.
DRWF Fellowships are awarded to ambitious individuals with a proven track record in diabetes research and who can display a meaningful and genuine intention to continue working in the field.
DRWF Fellows are expected to act as ambassadors for the DRWF charity, its mission, vision and values.
