Student research project looking at experience of self-management of the condition.

A university researcher is looking for adults in Wales living with type 2 diabetes to share information about how they feel about their self-management of the condition.

The project is titled Exploring the role of self-efficacy in type 2 diabetes self-management among adults in Wales: A qualitative study and is being conducted by Munasinghage Harshi Chathurika, a postgraduate student at Cardiff Metropolitan University, as part of dissertation requirements.

Harshi said: “The purpose of this study is to understand how confident you feel in managing your type 2 diabetes. Managing diabetes often involves looking after your diet, physical activity, medication, and blood sugar levels. We want to learn about your experiences, including any challenges you face and what helps you manage your condition.

“We are interested in hearing about your personal experiences and views.

“This study is entirely voluntary and your participation is anonymous. To take part in this study, participants must be adults (aged 18 years or older) living with type 2 diabetes in Wales, able to read and understand English, and able to provide informed consent and complete the online questionnaire. Individuals will be excluded if they have cognitive impairments that interfere with providing informed consent or completing written responses, are experiencing acute medical instability requiring emergency care, are under 18 years of age, or do not have type 2 diabetes.

“If you agree to take part, you will be asked to complete an online questionnaire consisting of semi-structured, open-ended questions about your experiences of managing type 2 diabetes and your confidence in carrying out daily self-management activities (for example, medication use, diet, exercise and blood glucose monitoring).

“The questionnaire will be completed remotely using a secure online platform, so you may complete it at a time and place that is convenient for you. It is expected to take approximately 10–15 minutes to complete.”

NOTE: DRWF will from time-to-time advise readers of ‘calls to participate’ in diabetes and related health research studies. It should not necessarily be considered that the charity is in any way connected to the study or the group issuing the call for participants. If we are involved in any way, we will make this known. We will only share external calls where we have confirmed that the study holds ethics committee approval, and the study is specific to diabetes and related health. Taking part in a medical research study is a big step and further helpful information can be found via the National Institute for Health and Care Research Clinical Trials Guide.
